Making the Most of Home Areas: Inside and Out

107

When it comes to the world of interior design, we can feel pressured to stay in line with the latest trends and stylized themes we find online, in magazines, and on TV.

However, we should be thinking about the colors that make us happy, the furniture we want to relax in, and the cozy or studious environments we want to create.

They say a person’s home is their castle but who wants cold and foreboding when they think of home?

Warm and welcoming or cool but colorful, we want our spaces to reflect our own personalities, not just what we’ve already seen elsewhere.

Retro or Modern?

To help make the most of space, first, we have to fill it (or not fill it) with the right furniture. What exactly is the room for and what will you do there?

Perhaps you want a living area with art on display, a place to eat with family or drink with friends, and ultimately wind down from the day.

Paler base colors might be best here, so you don’t detract from the collection you’re presenting. You might want a shelving arrangement or a display case for ornaments and travel souvenirs.

Although, many go for a focal wall, highly decorating one interior wall but leaving the rest bare so attention is drawn and discussion encouraged.

How Do You Relax?

Whether you chill out with a full stereo system or TV set up, you’ll want a seating arrangement to enjoy your media in comfort.

A sofa for lounging on with headphones and a big TV chair recliner to go with it for watching the newest home releases.

You may prefer some comfy armchairs for curling up with a good book but will a bookcase be too much? Think ahead and plan accordingly!

With a host of different textures as well as colors to think about, there are many ways to show character with just a few choice pieces of balanced decor while maximizing a room’s potential.

In a dining room, for example, you might forgo a traditional table and instead have a granite breakfast bar with stools that can be easily stored away, saving space in any way possible.

Veranda or Garden?

Making the most of outside space can be difficult if you’re a city dweller, you might only have access to a balcony (if you’re lucky!) but even the smallest of areas can be brought to life with shelves and hanging baskets, colorful plant pots, and the flowers they hold.

If you have a home with a larger garden, there are so many options for bringing the area to life while being a place of comfort.

Imagine vegetable troughs and fruit trees with wooden benches or maybe a modern topiary with contrasting black outdoor chairs with a table sitting on white stones.

Whatever your home setting, a little research and imagination can go a long way in making the most of all the space you have!
