On a furnace and water heater exhaust venting, what is a negative grade?

Could you be more specific? How was “negative grade” used in a sentence along the furnace and water heater venting? It might be referring to the horizontal vent connector pitch which must be always positive / at least ¼” per foot raising towards the vertical section / chimney.
