You can go to this page - http://www.checkthishouse.com/2498/gfci-locations-in-residential-buildings-based-on-2008-nec.html and scroll down to the list of required residential locations of GFCI outlet receptacles; just click on a location you’re interested in.

 

Depending on the location (bathroom, kitchen, laundry, etc.) restrictions may vary slightly but it is the maximum distance within which you might need to install GFCI outlet / doesn’t matter how close but not further than “x”). There are of course areas like within the shower stall where there should be no electrical outlet receptacles at all.
